The school idea is the non-linear evolution of the experience of X and XYlab: the challenge consisted in making the school an ongoing rather than occasional model, developing a business model and talking with local institutions (both at municipal and regional level). Then there was the aggregation of new energies and new partners, such as Barimakers and 3dNest: we had common objectives and interests, as well as having both organized and held workshops and events, to spread the making culture (including the 2 MakersMeeting held in Bari in 2014 and 2015). While dealing with two different areas (design / engineering), we "recognized" each other and we started to collaborate. The final name of the project instead took some time: the idea came one evening, drinking a beer on the Chiringuito pier, when Lucilla Fiorentino with disarming simplicity proposed “La Scuola Open Source”.

Bari, 18 - 30 July with 12 teachers, 12 tutors, 60 participants, SOS staff. The XYZ research and co-design laboratory was organized to co-design the Open Source School: 3 research / project areas were developed in a cooperative way: identity (X), tools (Y) and processes (Z). As Salvatore Zingale – professor of Semiotics at the Polytechnic of Milan and former professor of X in 2013 and of XY in 2014 – wrote, commenting on the morphology of the XYZ glyphs: “The X is the intersection, the dialogue. The Y is the bifurcation, the choice. The Z is the road that goes in every direction, the exploration. XYZ is the thing where people talk, choose and venture”.
